Here’s a list of «difficult» phrases, that is: phrases I didn’t know even though my level of knowledge of the English language was relatively advanced. For example:
– Se me ha dormido el pie derecho My right foot has gone to sleep.
– Dedo gordo del pie Big toe (or simply ‘toe’, so you may have to specify in context)
I’ve made this list along my years of study of the English language. As you’ll see, it’s not well structured, so you’ll see phrases for which there’s no Spanish part. This is Brittish English mainly, although you’ll also find American English.
I got this phrases from several sources: dictionaries, newspapers and all sorts of texts and I wrote them down simply because I found them interesting.

Le pillaron en una situación embarazosa: He was caught out in an embarrassing situation.
Todavía faltaba tiempo para que amaneciera (llegase la mañana): Morning was still some way off.
El chorizo le metió mano, y ella le dio una patada en la espinilla: The crook fondled her and she kicked him on the shin.
Mejor que me siente, estoy muerto de pie: I’d better sit, I’m died on my feet.
Me paré en el semáforo: I stopped at the lights
Me salté un semáforo (en rojo): I jumped the lights / I went though a red light
Me guarda (mi lugar en ) la cola? : Will you keep my place?
Me habló y me perdí (en la lectura del libro): She spoke to me and I lost my place in the book.
Se me ha roto la pierna por dos sitios: My leg has broken in two places
Habia una vieja casa en una callejuela que resistía sin ser derribada: There was an old house in a side street /backstreet that resisted being knocked down.
Un niño que vivía enfrente: A boy who lived across the street.
Las paredes tienen la pintura desconchada: The paint in the walls is peeling / the paint is coming off the walls.
Le faltan tejas y cristales : Some tiles and glasses are missing
Le tenía que pedir permiso a mis padres: I had to ask my parents for permission
Su madre siempre me invitaba a un bocadillo: His mother always invited me to a snack.
Cuando llegué aquí, el número de internos se podía contar con los dedos de (una) mano: When I got here, the number of internees could be counted on ten fingers.
Si les haces caso, acabarán haciendo contigo lo que les de la gana (estarás a su servicio): If you do what they want, you’ll end up at the beck and call of everyone.
Es fácil derorientarse en esta ciudad tan grande: It’s easy to lose your bearings in such a big city like this.
Una brújula es un aparato que te ayuda a orientarte si te pierdes en una montaña: A compass is a device that helps you get/find your bearings if you get lost on a mountain.
Tendremos que apretarnos el cinturón este mes: We’ll have to tighten our belts this month.
Cuando empezé este servicio ya había estado en Reino Unido: When I begun this post I had already been in the UK.
Le sentó mal y desde entonces le ha guardado rencor: He took offence and he’s since born her grudge.
Tuvieron que llamar a un inspector para que resolviera la disputa: They had to call an inspector to solve the dispute.
De todos modos no estoy yo muy seguro de que eso sea verdad, lo oí por radio macuto: Anyway, I’m not sure it’s true, I heard it through the bush telegraph.
Tienes tendencia a meterte en lios que no te convienen: You tend to get into affairs that are inconvenient for you.
Consumimos más de lo que es razonable We consume more that is reasonable

Tienes que hacer rondas cada dos horas:

Me arrastré por el fondo de la grieta (en el hielo): I crawled along the bottom of the crevasse (pron: krevás). Notice the difference between the words “crevasse” and “crevice”:

Mete la marcha atrás : Engage the reverse gear …or simply: reverse!
Dobló la esquina en marcha atrás: He came round the corner in reverse gear.
Parecía decidido pero en el último momento dio marcha atrás: He seemed decided but eventually he backed out.
Quiso subirse al autobús en marcha: He tried to get onto the bus while it was moving.

– Si no me falla la memoria: if I remember rightly
– (él) Era un mal estudiante, solía hacer pellas: He was a bad student, he used to skive (off) school / bunk (off) school (both are British), play hooky or hookey is American.
– Esto es un trabajo de negros: this is a pig of a job
– Vaya peñazo, esto es un trabajo de chinos: What a bore, this is a fiddly job
fiddle (DIFFICULTY) noun [S] UK INFORMAL something difficult to do, especially because the things involved are small or need careful use of the fingers: I find threading a needle a terrible fiddle. [+ to infinitive] It’s a real fiddle to assemble because of all the small parts.
Repairing a watch is a very fiddly job. I hate painting the fiddly bits in the corner.
Apenas hemos empezado el día y ya tenemos problemas: No sooner have we started the day than we have problems.

(Según me cuentas parece que él se parece a ti)
It Sounds Like He Looks Like You
No se puede decir en inglés “… sounds well” ni “…smells well”, ni “…tastes well”. Sin embargo, es posible decir “…looks well” pero significa más bien “parecer recuperado”. También se puede decir “…feel well”, pero significa “sentirse recuperado”. El uso de “well” en estos dos últimos casos implicaría que la persona en cuestión estaba enferma.
Te veo bien You look good.
Me siento bien I feel good.
– Tu idea suena bien. Your idea sounds good.
– Tu colonia huele – bien. Your cologne smells good.
– La comida sabe bien. The food tastes good
Te pareces a Robert Redford You look like Robert Redford.

Pero ¿merece la pena tanta polémica?: but, is all this polemic worth the trouble?

IN TIME VS ON TIME
On time = at the planned time; neither late nor early.
In time = with enough time to spare; before the last moment.
On time means «punctually»:
«Make sure to be on time for the party.» (Don’t be late)
In time means «before a time limit expires», such as in sports (basketball, in this case):
«Did he get the shot off in time?» (before the clock ran out)
OED says:
In time: Soon or early enough, not too late. Letters put into any of the Receiving Houses before twelve o’clock will be in time for the early mails. On time: Punctually. As my airline friends would say, I prefer on-time departures.

Especial(lly) vs Special(lly):
Eres muy especial You’re very especial (not special)
Especial is more strong than special. When meaning «specifically», special is used, not especial: a magazine aimed specially at working women. I specifically told you not to go near the water!. We came specially to see you.
Another meaning of special (not especial, which is rarely used, specially in the US), is ( informal ): more than usual or more than other things: I hate homework. Specially history (y no es mejor usar una coma aquí, en vez de un punto?).
